More than a quarter of Finland’s 75- to 89-year-olds regularly use the internet, according to new figures from Statistics Finland. The number of so-called “silver surfers” is rising by ten percent each year.
Some 85 percent of Finns aged 16 to 89 go online on a regular basis. Growth is now mainly among older age groups, because in practice nearly all under-54-year-olds already use the internet.
Online shopping is popular, with 44 percent of Finns ordering something on the internet in the last three months, while 77 percent of Finns use email. One third check their messages daily or almost daily.
Some 51 percent of Finns use social networking sites, while online media has a healthy audience: 59 percent of Finnish adults have watched television online in the last three months.
