Kasparov applies for Latvian citizenship

World Chess Champion and Russian opposition activist Garry Kasparov has applied for Latvian citizenship, Saeima Defense, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee Chairman Ainars Latkovskis (Unity) confirmed to LETA.

The application has been filled out in Latvian and there are all the relevant documents attached, said Latvkovskis.

He believes though that Kasparovs’ reasons are insufficient. Kasparov is requesting Latvian citizenship for “special merits”, mentioning that he won a youth chess competition in Latvia in the 1970s, points out Latkovskis.
