The Youth guarantee initiative will provide all young people who are unemployed and do not study with an opportunity to continue their studies or apply for the labour market within four months after dropping out of education or labour market.
“Given Europe’s current economic state, all member states should focus on a single action in order to improve youth employment. Latvia will be ready to launch its Youth guarantee initiative next year,” said Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis during an international conference organised by President of France Francois Hollande.
This initiative is planned to improve youth mobility within the EU. Dombrovskis assured leaders of EU states that it is important to keep in mind each country’s specific conditions and work to encourage residents who had left their home countries during the crisis to return home.
EU leaders had ultimately agreed that countries of the European Union are to provide full availability for Youth guarantee initiative starting with January 1, 2014. The problem of youth unemployment has reached a critical level in some EU countries. Therefore, the solution needs to be very specific and unique for every country.
Leaders also agreed that the main focus of this initiative needs to be training of young people to meet market requirements and contribute to the creation of new companies. This is planned to be achieved by encouraging young people to take responsibility and create their own enterprises. It is also necessary to continue EU labour market reforms.
Leaders of 24 European countries participated in Hollande’s organised conference in Paris. Latvia was represented by Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis and Welfare Minister Ilze Vinkele.
