Emigration level drops in Lithuania

emigration1Around 38,800 people emigrated from Lithuania last year, the final figures from the Statistics Lithuania, the country’s statistics department, show.

Compared to 2012, the number dropped by 2,300 people (5.6 per cent).

In January, the Statistics Lithuanian said around 40,400 people emigrated in 2013 but later updated information after a review of the expiration deadlines of residential permits for foreign citizens.

Out of those who emigrated last year, around 35,500 were Lithuanian citizens who made 91.4 per cent of all emigrants. 3,300 foreign citizens also left Lithuania in 2013, with the majority of them being citizens of Belarus (796), Russia (650) and Ukraine (565).

In 2013, 22,000 people immigrated into Lithuania, including 86.2 percent of Lithuanian citizens and 13.8 percent of foreigners.

The United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway and Germany remain the most popular destinations among emigrating Lithuanian citizens. And the majority of those coming back also arrive from these countries.
