European Court orders Latvia to pay the largest compensation to date – more than EUR 1 million

european human rightsIn the matter regarding fair remuneration, the European Court of Human Rights has ordered Latvia to pay compensation worth more than EUR 1 million.

This ruling was announced in the ‘Vistiņš and Perepyolkin against Latvia’. It was decided that the compensation paid to Jānis Vistiņš and Gennady Perepyolkin for the forcefully alienated real estate property located in Riga Freeport’s territory in 1997 unjustifiably limits the plaintiffs’ rights to property, as reported by Foreign Ministry’s press-service department.

Spokeswoman for the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers in international human rights institutions Kristīne Līce has confirmed that this will be the largest compensation the European Court of Human Rights has ever ordered Latvia to pay. She notes that this is the first Latvian case in which the ECHR assessed the alienation of property. Compensation amounts are usually the largest in such cases.
