Fruit manufacturers will no longer be allowed to use sugar in production of fruit juices. Today the Latvian authorities - the Agriculture Ministry - set the new rules that totally bans the use of sugar in fruits and the products made from fruits – juices and similar food products. The rules also apply to tomatoes.
The ban follows various international standards, as well as the European Commission’s proposal to ban the use of sugar in juice production. The new regulations will be published in Latvijas Vēstnesis after their approval. It is expected the changes will come into force on October 28.
The only exceptions are fruit nectars and the Latvian-produced sea buckthorn juice (only 140 grams of sugar per 1 litre of juice). These juices will only be allowed for sale within Latvia.
