A new plagiarism detection system has been created. Plag.lv is meant to evaluate scientific papers written by Latvian student for any signs of plagiarism. This internet resource is available for students and teachers free of charge.
The first version of ‘plag’ was created and tested in Lithuania. Plag.lt has been successfully functioning for more than a year. It is currently used y 1/5 of all students in Lithuania and every sixth teacher there, as stated by the portal’s representatives.
According to their general observations, the situation with plagiarism in Latvia is similar. ‘When we first started in Lithuania, we noticed plagiarism at universities was as strong as an unstoppable current,’ – says the creator of the website Horsts Klauss.
He notes small countries often do not have any effective anti-plagiarism systems.
Which system is best – institutional or private – will be decided by students and teachers. It is known, however, that the institutional system does not always comply with needs of consumers. Hungary’s ‘Sztaki’ anti-plagiarism system has lost its effectiveness.
According to Klaus, Plag.lt has proven its effectiveness in Lithuania. Teachers and students want to know exactly how much plagiarism there is in any given text.
‘Out system can find plagiarism in university scientific papers, state scientific research papers, textbooks, regulations and nearly 12,500 types of plagiarism – more than 1.2 million documents in total,’ – says Klauss.
