Survey reveals that every fifth Latvian would leave in event of military threat

latvian fleeingIn the event of military threat, Latvia would be abandoned by nearly a fifth of the country’s population, but every third person in Latgale would do the same, according to an SKDS survey commissioned by the news portal “Delfi”.

55.4 percent of respondents are certain that in a situation of military threat they would remain in Latvia. 18.2 percent said they would leave, but 26.4 percent could not say how they would act.

31 percent of respondents in Latgale admitted that in case of serious military threat and incursion of foreign military forces, they would leave the country, but 46 percent said they would stay. 22 percent could not formulate an opinion on the matter.

The smallest proportion of respondents who said they would leave the country, were residents of Riga, with 14 percent of respondents. In Vidzeme, the same response was given by 17 percent, in Kurzeme - 18 percent, in Zemgale - 16 percent.

Respondents who were most confident in their responses, were young people ages; 18 - 25 - 32 percent of them are sure they would exit. Only 7 percent of respondents older than 55, said they would leave the country. The youngest group of respondents comprises 38 percent who are certain they would remain, but the eldest - 70 percent.
