African swine fever spreads even more in Latvia

Swine feverOver the past weekend, the virus of African swine fever had spread over to three more farms in Latvia, as confirmed by recently validated laboratory results of the Food and Veterinary Service.

The virus has been confirmed in Kraslava’s Piedruja and Kalnieši parish, as well as Dagda’s Bērziņi parish, as reported by FVS.

The owner of pigs in Bērziņi parish had informed authorities of the infection. The farm contained 41 pigs and only one of which was infected. The animal pen and all pigs were registered with the Agricultural data centre. The dangerous virus has also been found in two farms in Kraslava. All pigs will be put down – a total of 46 domestic pigs.

Two of four wild boars infected with the virus were found in Kraslava. One wild boar was found in Bērziņi and one more was found in Indra parish.

With that, FVS reports state the dangerous virus has been found in 22 wild boars and 5 farms.

In total, FVS inspectors have visited 3,776 houses. 564 of the inspected households keep domestic pigs.

Over the course of inspections, FVS inspectors uncovered different violations, including in the transportation of pigs and unregistered animal and animal pens.

Specialists have taken 1,444 blood samples for laboratory tests.
