The darkest time of the year

Photographer Olev Mihkelmaa Photo by Mait JüriadoToday we can celebrate the darkest time of the year in Estonia. The days are very short, the sun rises at 9 am and the sunset is as early as 3:20 pm. On cloudy days it feels like the sun sets before the sunrise. Everybody is waiting for the white and shining snow. Last year the snow fell down already in the beginning of November. This year there has been only a thin layer of snow for a few days. Compared to Lapland in the north, where the sun does not rise at all for several months, it is still very bright in Estonia.

There is not much happening in the nature. All the migratory birds left Matsalu National Park to south for some time ago. All the local species live their everyday life. The warm winter without snow suits them well as it is easier to find the food. The animals are also doing well. The smartest of them sleep in the winter, for examples the bears and the hedgehogs. Calves are growing in the female moose belly and are waiting for the spring to be born along with the emerging nature.

While hiking in the wild you can see thousand shades of grey and brown colours. The colours will shine when there is a sunny weather. Colder mornings are especially beautiful when the air humidity will crystallize on trees and on grass. Tomorrow morning should be like that.
