DNA cooperation with Finnish police solves crimes

dna crimeAbout 100 robberies, thefts and violent crimes are closer to being solved after Finnish and Swedish police began sharing DNA database records this week.

The collaboration is part of an EU project to combat terrorism and transnational crime.

A total of about 28,000 DNA traces from Swedish crime scenes have been sent to the Finnish DNA register for analysis and possible matching. Finland has sent about 17,000 DNA profiles to the Swedish register at the National Laboratory of Forensic Science in Linköping for possible matches.

So far, the collaboration has shown 113 DNA hits that can be linked to individuals. A further 26 DNA traces were found in both country’s databases. DNA traces have also been linked to 80 robberies and 20 violent crimes, including assault.

Sweden has had a similar partnership with Holland since November.
