Russia will definitely react to the arrival of U.S. troops in the Baltic region. This fact will be used in Kremlin’s information war against Latvia and NATO, predicts politologist Kārlis Daukšts.
The arrival of a small group of U.S. soldiers will not have a big impact on Latvia’s armed forces. However, the very fact that USA has decided to send troops to the Baltic region is a military-political sign towards Russia. It shows that USA takes the situation seriously and that Russia’s current policy is considered a threat to the alliance. ‘I believe it is only a gesture. Let’s be realistic – this kind of action cannot be considered serious military activities performed by USA on Latvian soil. At the same time, the presence of these soldiers increases Latvia’s safety, because Latvia is viewed as an ally and a link in NATO’s defence,’ – says Daukšts.
‘The information war will definitely use the arguments that America’s army is rapidly closing in on Russia’s centre and its borders. American troops are coming close to Russia’s heart. It is clear that this will be used in the information war against Latvia and NATO,’ – says the expert.
The politologist adds that Russia’s response may include military activities. This includes sightings of Russian combat aircraft near the borders of Baltic States.
Daukšts predicts a reaction from Russian press in Latvia as well. ‘There will likely be a lot of unpleasant comments about this. These comments will likely impact views of Russian-speakers living in Latvia as well,’ – added Daukšts.
