Finnish thirst for passenger-imported booze up 20 percent

Finns buying boozeFinnish travelers brought home more than 80 million litres of booze last year, according to a report by the National Institute of Welfare and Health THL.

According to the health researcher Finns continued to quench their thirst with alcohol brought into the country from abroad – imports increased by 21 percent in the one-year period between May 2013 and April this year.

Finns managed to pack just over 80 million litres of alcohol with their return baggage over the last year. The total amount of 100 percent alcohol was calculated as 9.3 million litres.

The data show that passenger imports of hard liquour rose by 12 percent, while the growth in imports of mild wines reached around 20 percent and brewery beverages increased by thirty percent.

The findings are based on weekly surveys of more than 26,000 Finns. The monitoring exercise was jointly conducted by the state-owned alcohol retailer Alko, the THL, the health watchdog Valvira and the Ministry of Finance.
