Lithuanian population decreased by 12.3% since 2005

Statistics Lithuania informs that at the beginning of 2014, the estimated population of Lithuania amounted to 2943.5 thousand, i.e. by 28.4 thousand (1%) less than at the beginning of 2013. In 2005-2013, the population declined by 411.7 thousand, or 12.3%, informs ELTA/LETA.

In 2013, the number of marriages registered amounted to 20.5 thousand, that of divorces - 10 thousand, which is by 191 marriages (0.9%) and 425 divorces (4.1%) less than in 2012.

In 2013, the number of live births amounted to 29.9 thousand, which is by 574 less than in 2012.At the beginning of 2014, the median age of the population of Lithuania was 42 years, i.e. by 4 years longer than at the beginning of 2005.At the beginning of 2014, the population aged 65 and older amounted to 542.7 thousand, or 18.5%. Over the past nine years (2005-2013), the number of elderly persons increased by 11.6 thousand, or 2.2%.In 2013, 38.8 thousand residents emigrated from Lithuania, 22 thousand persons - immigrated.

Compared to 2012, the number of emigrants decreased by 2.3 thousand (5.6%), while the number of immigrants increased by 2.2 thousand (10.9%).
