Nine bears killed over hunting season’s first weekend

The first weekend of this year’s bear hunting season has seen a total of nine animals killed, officials say.

Three bears were killed on Friday in Savukoski, Lapland and Suomussalmi in the east. Then on Saturday a further three males were killed in Suomussalmi, Inari in Lapland and Kuusamo in Northern Ostrobothnia.

In total eight of the nine animals hunted so far have been in eastern quota areas.

In total 42 bears are eligible to be hunted this year within reindeer herding areas, 30 of which in the east.

Bear-hunting season began last Wednesday, and will stay in place until the end of October, or until all the bears in the national quota 115 have been killed.
