Number of domestic violence reports is up in Lithuania

All in all, the police received 21,151 domestic violence reports last year, compared to 18,268 in 2012, according to figures presented by the Police Department at a conference on domestic violence in Vilnius on Tuesday.

Out of all the domestic violence reports last year, 10,015 led to pre-trial investigations. Domestic violence cases accounted for 10.5 per cent of all crimes registered in Lithuania last year.

The Law on Protection against Domestic Violence came in force in Lithuania on 15 December 2011. Up until then, domestic violence cases were not recorded in most cases as investigations could be launched only after a victim’s official complaint.
