Obama: U.S. Navy base could be established in Estonia

estonia obama ilvesThe United States fully supports Estonia’s efforts to increase security in the region, the U.S. President Barack Obama announced on Wednesday, adding that a U.S. Navy base could be established in Estonia, cites LETA.

“Estonia will never stand alone,” Obama stressed during a joint press conference in Tallinn with Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves.

Work is under way on defense plans for the Baltic region, and Washington wants to send a clear signal to Russia, said Obama.

The new initiative will increase the U.S. presence in the region, said Obama, adding that work on the matter was proceeding in both the U.S. Congress and in talks with the partners in the Baltic region, and that establishing a U.S. Navy base in Estonia was being looked at.
