Only one-third of residents know that MEPs are elected by EU citizens

european parliament votingAlthough the European Parliament (EP) elections are due in just four months, only every third resident of Latvia knows that members of the EP (MEPs) are elected by European Union countries’ citizens, according to a poll carried out by SKDS for the public policy center “Providus”.

The study finds that 31 percent of Latvia’s residents believe that MEPs are appointed by Saeima members, whereas 15 percent believe that MEPs are nominated by the government. About 2 percent believe that it is state president who nominates MEPs.

Also, Latvia’s residents have little confidence in work done by Latvian MEPs, and the level of trust in MEPs in Latvia is lower than in Poland, Czech Republic and Bulgaria where similar polls have been carried out, notes “Providus”.

The SKDS poll was carried out last September, interviewing a total of 1004 residents of Latvia ages 18 to 74.
