Poll in Lithuania shows popular support for permanent NATO presence

68% of Lithuanians support permanent presence of NATO forces in their country, a public opinion poll by the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence shows.

About 85 percent of respondents expressed the view that Lithuania’s security was enhanced due to NATO’s deployment of troops in the Baltic region.

Xinhua and Ze News report that, Lithuania’s membership in the military bloc was currently supported by 83 percent of those polled.

Importantly, Article 137 of Lithuania’s Constitution sets forth that there may not be any weapons of mass destruction and foreign military bases on the territory of the Republic of Lithuania.

The poll was conducted among 1,010 people, aged 18-75, in 65 randomly selected municipalities.
