kalinigrad missilesRussia may relocate short range Iskander missiles to the Kaliningrad region bordering Lithuania if NATO strengthens the military presence in Eastern Europe, Russian news agency RIA NOVOSTI reported yesterday, DELFI wrote.

Former head of the International Treaty Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defence, Evgeny Buzhinsky hinted that Iskander missiles will be relocated in response to an increase in NATO forces in Eastern Europe.

State Duma Deputy Franz Klincevich confirmed news of the Iskander missile’s possible deployment by ominously stating that if NATO strengthens military presence in Eastern Europe, Russia “will automatically make these countries a target.”

“[If there is ] A serious object in the territory of Lithuania, any modern nuclear weapon [could be deployed] and practically there is no such state as Lithuania anymore. We need to understand that this is a serious problem for the state and the politicians of this state,” said Klincevich.

Buzhinsky downplayed the threat of potential conflict and referred to the situation as an “information war” but did not deny the probability of Iskander missiles being relocated to Kaliningrad region……

…….The missile can be equipped with conventional or nuclear warheads.  With a 500 kilometres range, the Iskander-M poses a formidable threat to alliance military objects.
