The largest travel guide book publisher in the world Lonely Planet has recognised Latvia as the fourth best destination for 2014. A total of ten cities have been compiled by Lonely Planet for this list. It starts off with Paris, followed by Trinidad, Cape Town and Riga.
Lonely Planet calls Riga “the cosmopolitan cornerstone of the Baltic” and admits that Riga has earned the right to be called the Cultural Capital of the European Union. Zurich is fifth, Shanghai is sixth, Vancouver is seventh, Chicago is eighth, Adelaide is ninth and Oakland is tenth on this list.
Since 1972, Lonely Planet has published more than 500 travel guides in eight languages. There are more than 200 experienced journalists working for Lonely Planet. Each is responsible for a specific country or group of countries. Journalists spend much time in a specific country, learn about its structure, culture, population, history, tourism attractions and offers. This allows them to compile detailed reports about each city’s advantages and disadvantages.
