Police warn about fraudsters who use fake euro banknotes in Latvia

fake euro notesLatvia’s State Police warn residents to be careful of fraudsters. There have been two cases recently when fraudsters used copied and souvenir banknotes in Riga to pay for purchases.

On January 20, some person used two souvenir EUR 100 banknotes to pay for a ring worth EUR 160 in some pawnshop in Riga. Even thought it is written on the banknotes that those are souvenir edition banknotes are are not to be used as a form of payment, the pawnshop’s employee did not notice this. He accepted the two banknotes and even gave the man EUR 40 in change, as reported by State Police.

This Wednesday, January 22, some resident turned to the police, saying that he sold an item to a stranger who gave him an envelope with EUR 170. After the deal was done, the victim noticed the banknotes were not real – merely copied on a colour printer.

Police urge residents to check the money they receive for transactions. It is highly important to familiarize yourself with the different types of banknotes and the anti-counterfeit measures used to manufacture them. Residents should carefully inspect banknotes upon receiving them.
