An average of 17% of Latvian youth immigrate abroad

latvia emigrationThe number of young people that leave Latvia to immigrate to other countries is nearly two times higher than the average in Europe, said Education and Science Ministry’s Initiative and Development Department’s Deputy Director Sanda Brūna during yesterdays international conference Youth in Latvia 2015-2020.

Brūna says that an average of 17% of Latvian young people immigrate to foreign countries in search of jobs. The average index across Europe is nearly two times lower than that – reaching only 10% on average.

Based on information compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia, there are approximately 292,000 young people currently living in Latvia. 51% are male and 49% and female.

Brūna explained during the conference that the number of young people in Latvia keeps declining with time. This is mostly dues to immigration, which is further increased by young people’s search for better education and jobs. As a result, the average age of Latvian residents keeps increasing.

The official also said that multiple development documents contain measures that are aimed at making sure young people remain in Latvia.

It would be necessary to improve ways and encourage young people to engage in government processes, make them interested to become members of non-government organizations and found their own companies.

In order to slow down immigration of young people to other countries, it is important to cultivate their sense of patriotism and loyalty to their home country. It is also important to offer education opportunities throughout the entire life, which is one of the most important factors that allow people to remain active on the job market.

It is also important to cultivate trust in municipal and state administration among young people. Surveys carried out in the past suggest this level of trust is not particularly high. Young people seem to trust the army, non-government organizations and the police the most.

The government and President are both on the opposite end of the trust list.
