sweden vaccineChicken pox are spreading as daycare and schools have opened again after summer recess. Demand for the vaccine, Valirix, has avalanched, but it’s not included in the general immunization program.

At private clinics, it costs a total of between SEK 1200 and 1300 to get the 2-stage vaccine. But the demand is still high in Stockholm, Uppsala and Gothenburg.

It’s undertain how the vaccine affects the body in the long term, whether it can lead to side effects down the road.

News agency TT reports that the vaccine has been included in the immunization program in the U.S. since 1996, and in Germany since 2004, and that Sweden is keeping an eye on how well it is working there.
