What Estonian girls wear in winter

ljToday I would like to talk about how Estonians wear in winter time. I was inspired for this topic by the numerous ratings of teams’ outfits at Sochi 2014 Olympics opening ceremony according to journalists’ opinions. While tastes differ considerably from article to article, I have not met any who would assess Estonian clothes as bad, silly or unfashionable. Moreover, such websites as www.latinopost.com, www.flare.com, www.fashionmagazine.com, www.societeperrier.com (and probably some others) gave to Estonia one of the highest marks at their lists of best uniforms.

Such a good taste that Estonians represented at the Olympic games is not random. Estonians indeed wear stylish and comfortable. Interestingly, that the way they wear is not similar to neighboring Finland, Russia and Latvia. It is quite unique and totally Estonian “invention”:) Estonians manage to look beautiful and feel comfortable regardless the season. For instance, in summer time girls prefer tender dresses and comfortable shoes while for winter time they change clothes to warm sport jackets and waterproof boots. Personally I respect this approach because I believe that every season requires proper clothes. In contrast, in neighboring Russia you may often meet women in short skirts and nylon pantyhose during winter because it’s believed that it looks very attractive. Visiting Finland don’t be surprised to see unzipped jackets and sneakers on young people. While I do like how it looks, the practical part is discussible. But maybe I am not that designed to cold weather as northern people are.

Ok, and now let’s specify what are typical winter clothes for Estonians girls. By that I don’t imply that every second girl wears in this way, of course all people are different and their preferences are broad. My aim is to describe one of the most popular Estonian trends which is very typical for this country. In general it’s quite close to what we saw at the Olympic opening ceremony with the difference of colours: usually Estonians prefer colourful things. I didn’t dare to take and upload pictures of real people, so further you will see just pictures of clothes from internet that represent this trend.

Jackets. Usually they are sportive, bright and decorated with different patterns.

So, if to believe that clothes in a way represent peoples’ inner world or at least their mood, we can right now together dispel the myth that Estonians are sullen and gloomy nation. Look how bright, warm and beautiful they are!:)
