Sweden’s highest mountain peak melting away

Sweden kebnekaiseSweden’s highest mountain peak, the southern tip of Kebnekaise, is melting away according to researchers at Stockholm University.

Kebnekaise’s southern peak, which is the highest in Sweden, stands now at  2097.5 meters above sea level, compared with 2121 meters above sea level in 1902, reports news agency TT.

Presently, there is only a 70 centimeters difference in height between the northern mountain’s southern peak and its northen peak. If next summer is also extremely hot, researchers say the northern peak could replace its southern counterpart as Sweden’s highest peak.

Many walking enthusiasts trek up to the top of the mountain ever year. Kebnekaise made international headlines three years ago when a Norwegian military airplane crashed into it, killing all on board.
